Tidal Aquarium
Experiential Science students have built and operated a marine aquarium within the classroom over the past three years. The three aquarium are maintained at different elevations so that they siphon the higher one to simulate the low tide. The sump pump, on a timer, pumps the water from the storage in the freezer where it is cooled, into the highest aquarium. From here the water flows through filters and the two lower aquariums and back into the freezer. The longer the water is held in the tanks, the warmer it gets. The temperature is regulated by the pumping times and the setting of the freezer. The total cost for the aquarium, the pump the filter materials and the second freezer was about $200. The glass was cut , drilled, and assembled from a glass picked up from a school renovation. |
