The PM10u Is basically a vacuum cleaner that measures the volume of air drawn through a fine filter over a given period of time. The filter, which is weighed both before and after the sampling period, picks of air borne particles greater than 10 micron in size. Environment Canada has provided Experiential Science with information table that will allow for calibration of the Nephalometer using the PM10u data. We installed the meter on the roof ay Vanier Catholic Secondary School because the location in central Riverdale represented an ideal location for monitoring particulates in the air. The roof location avoided interference with the machine.
In 1999 and 2000 we had set up the two machines and have the computer in place. We took six readings over this period and calculated particulates in the air based on weight gained by the filters from the PM10 meter using the analytical balances at Yukon College.
